The US Naval Sea Cadet Corps

The Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) is a national non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization for young people ages 13 through the end of high school who have a desire to learn about the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Sea Cadets are authorized by the Secretary of the Navy to wear Navy uniforms appropriately marked with the Sea Cadet Corps insignia. The Sea Cadet program adheres to a standardized training program designed to:

  1. Develop an interest and ability in seamanship and seagoing skills
  2. Instill virtues of good citizenship and strong moral principles in each cadet
  3. Demonstrate the value of an alcohol-free, drug-free and gang-free lifestyle
  4. Expose cadets to the prestige of public service and a variety of career paths through hands-on training with our nation’s armed services

The US Navy League Cadet Corps

The Navy League of the United States sponsors the Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) for mature and motivated youth ages 10 or older. The League Cadets, as they are known, participate in many of the same types of activities as Sea Cadets, but in a more age-appropriate fashion. League Cadets meeting certain requirements can graduate into the Sea Cadets at age 13. The same national headquarters that manages the Sea Cadet Corps also manages the League Cadet Corps.
The Alamo Battalion

The Alamo Battalion is San Antonio’s local NSCC/NLCC unit and serves both Sea Cadets and League Cadets. We drill monthly, with a break in the summer. Every drill has a Plan of the Day (POD) that serves as the schedule for activities for the drill. The Alamo Battalion usually drills at the Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) at the San Antonio Military Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston. However, we often drill offsite at locations providing unique training capabilities for our cadets. Weekend drills usually begin at 0730 on Saturday and end around 1130 Sunday.

Drill weekends include a variety of training activities. During a typical year, we have camping, firefighting, police training, cyber patriot teams and more. We also have physical training, close-order drill, swimming qualifications, uniform inspections, and awards ceremonies.

Cadets in the Alamo Battalion have the opportunity to attend Recruit Training, the Sea Cadet “boot camp”, coordinated by our national organization, during breaks in the school year. After graduating from Recruit Training, Cadets can register for Advanced Training in subjects such as Field Medical, Sailing, Seamanship, Field Operations, Naval History and Heritage, SCUBA diving, Naval Special Warfare Orientation, Culinary Service, Photojournalism and much more.

Our Volunteer Staff

The Alamo Battalion, like all Sea Cadet units, is staffed entirely with volunteers, including parents of cadets, veterans, and active-duty members of the military. None of them are paid. We rely upon the hospitality of our host facilities and the kindness and generosity of specialized instructors such as firefighters, police officers, medics and more.

​We welcome volunteers on an ad hoc basis (such as providing food or cleanup for events). However, volunteers interacting with the cadets or performing administrative functions must join the Sea Cadet Corps, undergo background checks and take special training for the well-being of the cadets.
